About Me

Hi! I’m Kristen — the photographer behind Pilina Photography.

I’ve had a camera in my hand since I was five years old (a little film camera that I was very serious about). I grew up in Philadelphia, studied Elementary Education at Penn State University, and always knew I loved two things: people and photos.

I moved to Maui in 2017, and what was meant as a visit to my uncle's house turned into my forever home. I spent nearly a decade teaching elementary school with the Hawaii Department of Education, and those years shaped so much of who I am — and how I photograph families today. Working closely with kids and parents every day taught me patience, flexibility, and how to find the magic in the middle of real life.

Being part of the school community allowed me to build genuine, lasting relationships here. Maui isn’t just where I work — it’s where I’ve built my life.

Photography grew alongside those years. I contracted with local hotels, photographing visiting families and learning how to adapt quickly, work in any light, and help people feel comfortable fast. In the middle of teaching full-time, shooting sessions, and studying photography, I became a mom — twice — to two babies just a year apart. That season stretched me in every way, and it also deepened my understanding of how fleeting these years really are.

A few years ago, I made the leap to step out of the classroom and into photography full-time. Starting my own business wasn’t about chasing something bigger — it was about building something rooted in connection, community, and the kind of images I want for my own family.

I’m also married to a camera-shy husband, so trust me — you don’t need to know how to pose. My sessions are relaxed, movement-based, and focused on interaction over perfection. I’ll guide you the whole way, but nothing will feel stiff or overly styled.

Whether you’re raising your kids here on Maui or visiting and soaking it all in, I’d love to help you document this season — sandy toes, wild toddlers, awkward dads, and all.
